Why choose a hard suitcase?

A hard travel suitcase keeps its shape, is sturdy and ideal if you fly often or carry fragile items. The shell protects against impacts, pressure and rain, while an integrated TSA lock provides security. Choose from 2-wheel and 4-wheel trolleys, from compact hard carry-on luggage to large suitcases for long trips. You can also choose models without a zipper, with a fixed frame or click-lock closure, as well as striking prints or business-style colours. Looking for proven quality? Materials used for hard suitcases

Polypropylene (PP)

Polypropylene is impact-resistant and flexible, so it absorbs hard knocks. It is relatively lightweight and often used in suitcases without zippers, with a fixed frame or click-lock closure. Ideal if you want maximum durability for frequent flights.

Polycarbonate (PC)

Polycarbonate combines low weight with high strength and resilience. The shell can dent and usually springs back, reducing the chance of permanent damage. It is often a little more expensive, but perfect for frequent travellers who want a premium hardcase.

ABS

ABS is affordable and rigid, but generally more sensitive to scratches and can be slightly heavier. It is a great choice for occasional trips or if you are looking for an affordable hard suitcase. For good basic protection and excellent value for money, take a look at American Tourister suitcases.

Aluminium

Aluminium suitcases retain their shape extremely well and offer top protection, often with a fixed frame or click-lock closure without a zipper. They are heavier and scratches or dents are more visible, but for maximum rigidity and a luxurious look, aluminium is the best hardcase option.

Closures and locks

  • Zipper closure: lightweight and often expandable. Some models have a waterproof zipper for extra protection against rain.
  • Fixed frame or click-lock closure without a zipper: very sturdy and less vulnerable to forced entry, popular with PP and aluminium suitcases.
  • TSA lock: essential when travelling to the US and useful worldwide. You set the code yourself; store it separately and always test the lock before departure.

Complete your suitcase with suitcase and travel accessories such as padlocks, luggage tags and luggage scales.

Carry-on luggage and dimensions

Airlines have different rules for hard carry-on suitcases. Common dimensions are 55 x 40 x 20 cm (including Ryanair Priority) and 55 x 35 x 25 cm. Always measure including the wheels and handles and check your airline’s current requirements. Choose 2 wheels if you often encounter uneven pavements, or 4 wheels (spinner wheels) for effortless manoeuvring in terminals. Want to make sure your bag meets the strictest cabin requirements? Water resistance and rain

Hardcase shells are naturally water-resistant. The weak points are zippers and seams. Models with waterproof zippers offer extra protection in a rain shower. During prolonged rain or transfers outdoors, a suitcase cover or an extra dry bag for your electronics can help.

Care, scratches and travel tips

  • Cleaning: use lukewarm water with mild soap and a microfibre cloth. Avoid aggressive cleaning products and scouring pads.
  • Reducing scratches: choose a matte or textured finish if you want scratches to be less visible. Small scratches can sometimes be lightly polished with plastic polish; test it first on an inconspicuous area.
  • Protection during travel: a suitcase cover or stretch film helps prevent scratches on the conveyor belt and in the hold.
  • Pack wisely: distribute the weight evenly and stay within your airline’s weight limits to prevent damage to the wheels and handles. Use packing cubes to stay organised and save space.
  • Storage and service: store your suitcase in a dry place, preferably in the included dust bag. As an official dealer, ByMetz can help with the manufacturer’s warranty and repairs through our Samsonite Service Centre department.

Frequently asked questions

What is the sturdiest suitcase?

For maximum rigidity, choose an aluminium suitcase or a polypropylene model with a fixed frame or click-lock closure. Polycarbonate offers an excellent balance between strength and weight and is the best all-round hardcase for most travellers.

Which is better: a hard or soft suitcase?

Hard suitcases offer better protection against impacts, pressure and rain and are ideal for air travel. Soft suitcases are often lighter and have exterior pockets. If you fly often or carry fragile items, choose a hardcase; for flexible packing and road trips, a softcase is also a great option.

Which suitcase is suitable for 23 kilos of checked baggage?

Usually, choose a large hard suitcase of around 75 cm (approximately 90-105 litres) or a compact medium suitcase of around 67 cm if you pack minimally. Choose 4 wheels for stability and a lightweight material such as polycarbonate or polypropylene.
