Why choose a hard suitcase?
A hard travel suitcase is rigid, sturdy and ideal if you fly often or carry fragile items. The shell protects against knocks, pressure and rain, while an integrated TSA lock adds security. Choose between 2-wheel and 4-wheel trolleys, from compact hard carry-on to large suitcases for long trips. Also available without a zipper (fixed frame/click closure) and in eye-catching prints or business colors. For proven quality, see our Samsonite suitcases. On a budget? Choose a solid base series or an ABS model.
Hardcase materials
Polypropylene (PP)
Polypropylene is impact-resistant and flexible, so it absorbs strong shocks. It is relatively light and often used in suitcases without zippers with a fixed frame or click closure. Ideal if you need maximum durability for frequent flying.
Polycarbonate (PC)
Polycarbonate combines low weight with high strength and resilience. The shell can dent and usually springs back, reducing permanent damage. It is often a bit more expensive but perfect for frequent travelers wanting a premium hardcase.
ABS
ABS is affordable and rigid but generally more prone to scratches and slightly heavier. A good choice for occasional trips or if you want a cheap hard suitcase; a strong value option is available in our American Tourister collection.
Aluminium
Aluminium suitcases are extremely rigid and offer top protection, often with a fixed frame or click closure without a zipper. They are heavier and scratches/dents are more visible, but for maximum stiffness and a luxury look this is the top hardcase option.
Closures and locks
- Zipper: lightweight and often expandable. Some models have a waterproof zipper for extra protection from rain.
- Fixed frame/click closure (no zipper): very sturdy and less vulnerable to forced entry, popular with PP and aluminium suitcases.
- TSA lock: essential for travel to the US and handy worldwide. You set your own code; keep it separate and always test the lock before departure.
Complete your suitcase with suitcase & travel accessories such as locks, tags and luggage scales.
Carry-on and dimensions
Airlines apply different rules for a hard carry-on suitcase. Common sizes are 55 x 40 x 20 cm (e.g. Ryanair Priority) and 55 x 35 x 25 cm. Always measure including wheels and handles and check your airline's current rules. Choose 2 wheels for rough pavements or 4 wheels (spinner) for effortless maneuvering in terminals. Want to be sure your case meets the strictest cabin rules? See the overview of airline rules 40x30x20.
Water resistance and rain
Hardcase shells are naturally water-repellent. Weak points are zippers and seams. Models with waterproof zippers offer extra protection in showers. For prolonged rain or outdoor transfers, a suitcase cover or an extra drybag for electronics helps.
Care, scratches and tips
- Cleaning: use lukewarm water with mild soap and a microfiber cloth. Avoid aggressive cleaners and scouring pads.
- Limit scratches: choose a matte or textured finish if you want scratches to be less visible. Minor scratches can sometimes be lightly polished with plastic polish; test first in an inconspicuous spot.
- Protect when traveling: a suitcase cover or stretch wrap helps against scratches on the carousel and in the hold.
- Packing wisely: distribute weight evenly and stay within your airline's weight limits to avoid damage to wheels and handles. Use packing cubes to stay organized and save space.
- Storage and service: store your suitcase dry, preferably in the supplied dust bag. As an official dealer, ByMetz assists with manufacturer warranty and repairs through our Samsonite Service Centre.
Frequently asked questions
Which suitcase is the sturdiest?
For maximum stiffness choose an aluminium suitcase or a polypropylene model with a fixed frame or click closure. Polycarbonate offers an excellent balance between strength and weight and is the best all-round hardcase for most travelers.
Which is better: hard or soft?
Hard suitcases provide better protection from impacts, pressure and rain and are ideal for air travel. Soft suitcases are often lighter and have external pockets. If you fly a lot or carry fragile items choose hardcase; for flexible packing and car trips softcase can also be fine.
Which suitcase fits 23 kg checked baggage?
Typically choose a large hard suitcase around 75 cm (about 90–105 liters) or a compact medium of around 67 cm if you pack minimally. Opt for 4 wheels for stability and a lightweight material like polycarbonate or polypropylene.
